DAVID NEWMAN
SCHOLARSHIP
When asked in a recent interview, what was the most important event that influenced my
decision to pursue a path in classical music, I hesitated and reflected, since there were several
people and events that have helped steer my career at different juncture points.

I began playing the Viola in 7th grade, attending a large orchestra class in Brooklyn, NY.
Due to the size of the class, it was almost impossible for the instructor to give individual attention
to the students.

I remember the kindness of David Newman, my first orchestra teacher.  He offered to give me
individual lessons, as time permitted at the school.  Soon there after, he located a scholarship
for admission to a specialized pre- college conservatory program.  He suggested that I audition
for this program, which would offer me a wonderful educational experience.

Please note at this point, the extent of my repertoire consisted of Bouree' by Handel, a few
scales and the song "Mame" which my mother loved, and asked if I could figure out.

The vision of my orchestra teacher afforded me the opportunity I would have never had, nor
known about. In recognition of the vision of my first teacher, and the many caring instructors,
who assist in opening doors for their promising students the David Newman Scholarship is
awarded by CCMS annually.
